UST 400th Anniversary -- Jan. 28, 2011

So the University of Sto. Tomas celebrated their 400th year last week. It's one of the well known schools here in my country...and since my mom is an alumni, we had a chance to visit some of the uni's exhibits specifically organized for the centennial celebration.

It was fun. It was memorable...and the UST's archive alone is so rich already I keep picturing expensive honey as a visual comparison to the whole thing. It's golden, it's sweet...and just amazingly awesomely awesome awesome awesomeness....

Anyway! Pictures! (Photos courtesy of Ma'am Budji Tresvalles)

mom and i...with the Arc of the Century behind us.
to the main building! some dudes preparing for the celebration later that night.

Inside the Main Building is the once-every-centennial-anniversary-exhibit...we first went to the...um...old stuff they used in churches...like...400 years old...sort...methinks.
the finest crucifixion (?) sculpture in the Philippines. Those slots you see on the cross used to be studded with silver...but ehm....you know what happens in my country whenever they find gold, silver and precious stones...so yeah.

So...below this was the once-in-a-century-exhibit....but sad to say...we don't have any camera in our hands. OF ALL DAYS RIGHT?! OF ALL DAYS. So I only have two artists to show to you.

Pablo Amorsolo
Pablo Amorsolo
Pre-Spolarium watercolor *cough*doodle*cough* by Juan Luna...sorry for the reflection. epic fail. haha

I would love to show you the awesomeness of Anita Magsaysay-Ho, Carlos "Botong" Francisco, Fernando Amorsolo..more of Luna's works...and many other amazing artists...but I suck. I don't have a camera on such a special day, just a crummy sketchpad with rusty hands. I'm really disappointed...but it's still worth posting. Sigh. It's like....Rose Dawson with only a memory of Jack in her mind to recall what he looks like in the Titanic. hahaha....sad...very very sad. Anyway....to the Lumina Pandit Exhibit we shall go!

Lumina Pandit Exhibit~
someday my sketches will be framed like that as well. wahahaha! all things posted on that wall is by Carlos "Botong" Francisco. The large scale paintings are now owned as a private collection by some rich dude, but some of the other parts/segments belong to the UST archives....shelved...hidden...waiting for the next century to be revealed. I'm quite jealous. Wish I could live to a hundred and twenty...to witness it all again. hahahah!
eat that Team Manila. ang vector ni mang botong lapis at grid. powtek. XD
i had the urge to grab the frame and run away with it...really. it was love at first sight. hahaha!
most of Botong Francisco's doodles...*sniff* -- oh that thing on the center is just a pc monitor. haha!
umm...well it was a nice...wooden thing. too bad the picture came out dark. haha!
i was trying out the woodblock printing process....the ink smelled like oil paints~
The oldest--and only-- preserved Baybayin (not alibata) document of a deed of sale of a land in Tondo, Manila, owned by a Donya.
book on the farther side/right side is by Rene Descartes
Biblia Sacra...said to be the most precious book in the UST Archives.
Heliocentric Cosmology book by Nicolaus Copernicus -- yes that's an original copy.
Opera Omnia by Hippocrates -- original copy as well.
some book...i forgot what it was. haha

OLD NEWSPAPERS!!! :))

The place my mom said yes to my dad if she can be his girlfriend. 20+ years later, the first by-product of their love is now standing on it...with no more trees (since this part of UST used to be filled with trees...lots of it) and a new sculpture to boot.
And...well I shall end with this picture...because it's the only old thing we were allowed to touch. That typewriter weighs 10kg btw. Hahaha! XD
Besides the limited stock of pictures I have, I also bought a replica of the very first book printed here in the Philippines (Doctrina Cristiania) and the woodblock print...and a post-card. It was a really loooong fun...awesome day...especially if you eat lunch at this place that serves daing na manok salpicao (daw) =))

Interestingly enough, I saw the date of when I got my very first personal bible this Sunday, and it was celebrating it's 2nd birthday that same day we were celebrating UST's 400th. Haha! Just a fun coincidence I must say :)

Well~! That's all for now...it was my 2nd day of internship in Goriotik yesterday....now I understand why everytime my parents come home, they love sitting on the sofa -- IT'S SUCH A RELIEF...and I'm just an intern at this point mind you...imagine my satisfaction when I'm really working....hmmmm~

Thank You, God! XD

John 15:5 - "I am the vine; you are the branches. If a man remains in Me and I in him, he will bear much fruit; apart from Me you can do nothing."

I can't get over it...I'm sorry....hahaha....Underwood....the Mac back in the day~
